CCTV Installation: Testing and Handover Checklist
CCTV installation includes camera placement, wiring, recorder setup and testing. Before accepting a completed system, check that the installed equipment matches the agreed quotation. Confirm camera locations and ask the technician to explain any changes made during the job. Record missing items or unfinished work while the installer is still on site.
Check every camera view
Review each camera individually. Look for blocked areas, tilted horizons, glare and an angle that misses the intended subject. Check both the live image and a recording. A camera can appear acceptable on a small screen yet fail to show the detail you need. Arrange a night-time check where low-light performance is important.
Test recording and playback
Ask the installer to demonstrate a saved recording from each channel, not only the live feed. Check the date, time and channel names. Find a specific time in playback and confirm that you can export a short sample. Retention should be discussed as an estimate based on the configured equipment and recording settings.
Review cabling and power
Inspect accessible cable routes and connections for neatness, protection and strain. Ask which power supplies and network devices belong to the CCTV system. If backup power is part of the quotation, have the agreed behaviour demonstrated safely. Electrical work and work at height should be handled by qualified personnel.
Take ownership of accounts
Use your own account for remote access and change initial credentials. Ask how users can be added or removed and what permissions they receive. Keep recovery details secure. Do not leave the installation dependent on a technician’s personal login. Document network changes so future maintenance can be carried out without guesswork.
Keep a handover record
Keep models, serial numbers, supplier documents, warranty terms and support contact details together.
